Q&A: Rancher Labs CEO and Co-Founder Sheng Liang Talks About $10M in Series A Funding for Managing Container Infrastructure

Rancher Labs, a startup developing Docker infrastructure software, this week announced $10M in Series A funding from Mayfield and Nexus Venture Partners. The funding will be allocated to furthering product development and expanding the company's engineering and development teams. To find out more about Rancher Labs and its plans, I spoke with Sheng Liang, CEO and co-founder.

VMblog:  I'm always excited about new companies and their successful raising of a series A round.  Can you tell us about your recent funding?

Sheng Liang:  With the rapid adoption of container technology, Rancher Labs' open source software has grown in popularity by allowing organizations to run containers in production, across any cloud. With this, we've been able to partner with fantastic investors who truly believe in our vision.

VMblogExplain why you believe containers are important and what the value add is of Rancher Labs?

Liang:  Containers are quickly becoming the de-facto large-scale production platform for application deployment. Our goal is to provide organizations with the tools needed to take full advantage of container technology. By developing storage and networking software purpose-built for containers, we are providing organizations with the best possible experience for running Docker in production.

VMblog:  What are some of the benefits provided by Rancher Labs?

Liang:  Rancher's growth has come as containers are fundamentally changing the way infrastructure is consumed. Based on the technology's current requirements, Rancher is developing innovative solutions for container infrastructure, including networking, load balancing, monitoring and storage, designed specifically for containers. With this new approach, Rancher makes it easier for organizations to adopt Docker, deploy it anywhere and manage it in production.

VMblog:  Can you tell us about the genesis of Rancher Labs?

Liang: Of course. Rancher was founded by the team behind, bringing extensive industry knowledge to the company. The founding leadership team includes myself as chief executive officer, Shannon Williams as vice president of sales and marketing, Darren Shepherd as chief architect and Will Chan as vice president of engineering.

VMblog:  Talk about the launch of your flagship product, Rancher.

Liang:  We are announcing the beta-availability of Rancher, an open source software platform that provides a complete set of infrastructure services for managing containers in production. Rancher connects these infrastructure services with popular container management tools, such as native Docker CLI and Docker Compose, to make it simple for organizations to deploy and manage containerized workloads on any infrastructure.

Very interesting update from Rancher Labs.  Thanks again to its CEO and co-founder, Sheng Liang, for taking time to speak with VMblog.  For more information, contact Rancher Labs by clicking here.
