VMware CTO Musical Chairs - Veteran Ray O'Farrell Appointed to Key Position Days Ahead of VMworld

Virtualization giant VMware has scrambled to fill a key position within the company - the recently vacated CTO position.

Today, VMware announced the appointment of Ray O'Farrell to the role of Chief Technology Officer as well as Chief Development Officer.  In the combined CTO and CDO role, he will be responsible for orchestration across all of VMware's R&D Business Units and will lead VMware's CTO team.  O'Farrell most recently served as GM, Software-Defined Data Center Division.  According to VMware, this appointment is effective immediately and O'Farrell will continue to report to Pat Gelsinger, VMware chief executive officer.

Ordinarily, this announcement wouldn't have been "AS BIG" of a deal as it might be today.  Sure, it isn't necessarily uncommon to hear about a new CTO taking over at a company the size of VMware.  But in this case, it is perhaps more interesting because of the timing of the departure.  For one, other executives and leaders have recently announced departures from the virtualization giant as well.  But beyond that, VMware is about to embark on its largest annual trade show in the coming days as VMworld 2015 takes over the streets of San Francisco this coming Sunday.  And you can better bet, VMware had a host of presentations, meetings and briefings lined up for the CTO.  In this case, that duty fell on Ben Fathi, who up until this past Sunday, was and had been the CTO of VMware since January of 2014.  However, Fathi confirmed his intention to leave the company, but hasn't yet announced where he will land... although he is reportedly "talking with a few companies."

O'Farrell is therefore going to have an even busier VMworld that he first thought, doing double duty.  He will not only have to fill the shoes and responsibilities of the CTO position at VMworld, but he was assuredly already on the ticket to perform duties as the GM of the company's software-defined data center division.

In response to the announcement, Pat Gelsinger, CEO of VMware, said:

"As VMware continues to evolve its research and development efforts, Ray O'Farrell will work in close partnership with our business unit leaders and world class R&D teams to drive industry-leading innovation.  He brings extensive and invaluable experience in managing a wide range of our global R&D teams as well as developing and releasing many of our most impactful products."

O'Farrell is a long time VMware veteran, having joined the company in 2003 to build out the storage technologies of VMware ESX (later VMware vSphere). Over his tenure, he has led development teams across the entire VMware global R&D footprint and product portfolio.  He has more than 20 years of experience in software engineering and product delivery.  Before joining VMware, O'Farrell led product development teams at Microtec/Mentor-Graphics, Improv Systems, Industrial and Scientific Imaging and Ashling Microsystems.

VMblog wishes Ray O'Farrell the best of luck and success in his new role as CTO and CDO.
