Accelerated Adaption of Virtualization in Networking

Virtualization as a concept is quite similar as the OSI layering that the networking industry uses to design systems. OSI layering enables a modular set of layers that one can swap in an out to work with the higher or lower layers. As an example, a transport protocol can be replaced with another transport protocol in the OSI networking stack and it will happily live with the higher and lower layers.

Virtualization is essentially accomplishing the same for whatever it is applied to. VM instances can now be moved around servers and data centers without problems as they are designed to be modular with everything else around them. Similarly, Virtualization applied to networking is a powerful concept, whereby overlay networking tunnels can be swapped out for another overlay tunnel that fits the requirements better. Or better yet, for WAN applications many overlay tunnels can be used simultaneously so that each application can use the tunnel that is the best fit for the application and its SLA requirements.

2016 will show us accelerated adaption of virtualization in networking. We already have seen the surge in data centers where SDN (Software Defined Networking) took over the data center management. Modular and swappable WAN management is going to pick up traction, especially with multi-office environments where the value of WAN virtualization is immense.
