Leostream Releases New Whitepaper on Turning OpenStack into a VDI and DaaS Powerhouse

Today, Leostream released a new whitepaper that serves as a guide for organizations and service providers looking to host high-performance virtual desktops on OpenStack. The complimentary download, titled "Turning OpenStack into a VDI and DaaS Powerhouse," addresses how the Leostream Connection Broker can be used as a complete virtual desktop management layer, and introduces readers to the Teradici Pervasive Computing Platform as an enabler for OpenStack VDI/DaaS.

"OpenStack has turned heads as a new platform for virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and desktops-as-a-service," comments Dana Bull, Marketing Specialist at Leostream and whitepaper co-author. "That being said, in order to deliver desktops at scale, IT decision makers must focus on the right combination of connection broker and display protocol technology to support the demand for mobility, media rich desktops, and PCoIP clients."

The whitepaper outlines key technology components for building a virtual desktop environment on OpenStack and focuses on incorporating Leostream and Teradici software into the overall design.

"Both the Leostream Connection Broker and the Teradici Pervasive Computing Platform install seamlessly into an OpenStack environment," summarizes Karen Gondoly, CEO of Leostream. "The connection broker provides the tools IT administrators need to provision and delete desktops in OpenStack, allocate those desktops to users, and control how and when a user can connect to their virtual desktop.  By using the Pervasive Computing Platform, end users receive pixel perfect screen rendering and can connect to their OpenStack desktop from a variety of devices."

The whitepaper is available for download, and covers the following topics in detail:

  • Key solution components for building an OpenStack VDI/DaaS environment, and tips for choosing a hypervisor, display protocol, and connection broker
  • Specific benefits for selecting OpenStack as a hosting platform
  • Four high-level steps to creating a hosted desktop solution in OpenStack, including an architecture diagram
