Prediction: Application Development is Driving IT Sales

The industry is changing in terms of how it's buying products. The IT department once ran the show and dictated which applications and infrastructure would be used, but the rise of Public Cloud and SaaS applications have created a desire from developers to choose applications themselves. Our prediction is that 2018 will see an environment where IT manages a self-service infrastructure that DevOps teams use to self-provision their tools.

Self-service platforms that incorporate SaaS functionality will prevail in this new environment, and self-service provisioning is a key to agile software development. According to Gene Kim at Puppet Labs, "When self-service provisioning can be done quickly and consistently through complete virtualization, you eliminate the obstacles to give developers, testers, and QA the environments they need for Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment."

Application development is creating a new drive for self-service private cloud technology, and IT departments should look for automated cloud platforms to deliver that self-service without undue administrative overhead.
