Vembu BDR Suite 3.8 Provides Free Backup and Recovery Options

Vembu is a leading provider of a portfolio of software products and cloud services for small and medium sized businesses, and they've been around for more than a decade.  The company has focused their efforts on Backup and Disaster Recovery software, offering its flagship product, BDR Suite -- which consists of VMBackup for VMware vSphere and Hyper-V, Disk Image backups for Physical machines, Workstations and backing up individual files and folders to physical servers and the cloud.

Vembu offers flexible deployments like on-site, off-site and cloud through a single, common user interface.  They also configure item level backups like Microsoft Exchange Servers, Sharepoint, SQL, My SQL, Office 365, and G Suite.

The latest version of Vembu BDR Suite v3.8.0 has come out with a few notable features in two major offerings - one with unlimited features for up to three virtual machines; and a second which allows organizations and users to backup an unlimited number of virtual machines but with a restricted set of features.

If an organization does not require business continuity and data management features of backup policy such as near continuous data protection with CBT (changed block tracking), incremental backup, VM replication with Failover and Failback process, Quick VM Recovery and Offsite DR, then those organizations can stay with the free edition of Vembu BDR Suite.

Vembu BDR Suite offers 30 days of a full feature trial during the evaluation period.  Once the trial expires, the user can either opt for the free or paid edition of Vembu BDR Suite based on their business requirements.  A nice touch is that the download and installation of Vembu BDR Suite is the same for both the free and the paid edition -- the functionality depends on the license being applied.  The free edition does not require any license post trial, as the trial package of Vembu BDR Suite gets converted into the Free edition automatically.

The paid edition requires that a license be applied from the Vembu Portal, and the limitation around the number of sockets or VMs and servers depends on how much is purchased at the time of licensing.  The user can easily upgrade from the free to the paid version by simply applying for a license at the Vembu portal at any time.

Detailed Features of the Free Edition

Unlimited features for Limited environment (3 VMs):

Here's the good news.  Using the Vembu BDR Suite in its trial version does not require purchasing a license.  And the free edition offers a number of unlimited features for a limited environment, which includes:

  • Agentless VMware backups for multiple VMs: Configuring backups to protect multiple VMs without having to install an agent.
  • Disk Image Backups from BDR Server: Disk Image Backups can now be configured and managed via Vembu BDR Server.  Relying on proxy agents is no longer required, unless it's a distributed deployment which require individual proxy agent installation.
  • Full VM Backup: Will backup the entire VM, including OS, applications and the data.
  • Storage Pooling: Storage Pools are used to aggregate the space available from different volumes and utilize them as a storage for specific backups.  The hybrid volume manager of Vembu BDR Server supports scalable and extendable backup storage for different storage media such as Local drives, NAS (NFS and CIFS) and SAN (iSCSI and FC).  Vembu BDR provides storage pooling option for both backup level and group level.
  • LAN free data transfer using SAN and Hot- Add modes: Vembu VM backup supports Direct SAN, Hot-Add and network transport mode to backup the VM data.
  • Auto Authorization: Enabling Auto authorization in Vembu BDR allows proxy agents to get registered using a unique registration key generated by the respective BDR server.
  • Automatic Backup Scheduling: Backups can be automatically scheduled as per the user's flexibility
  • Encryption Settings: Users can now provide additional security to their disk based backup jobs by assigning custom-passwords to the backup server, such that all backup data will be encrypted and restored/accessed only by providing the custom-password.
  • FLR from GUI (Backup & Replication): File Level Recovery (FLR) is now available for both backup and replication jobs where users can choose specific files and folders from VMware/Hyper-V/Disk Image backups and VMware replication, to be restored in a quick fashion.

All of the above major features are included in the free edition for up to 3 virtual machines.

Restricted Features for unlimited virtual machines:

All of the features mentioned above are for limited business environments and will be applicable with a few restrictions in the features.  This includes:

  • Application aware processing: Configuring them for a Hyper-V environment is restricted.
  • Changed Block Tracking: Only the incremental blocks changed since the previous backup will be tracked and backed up in the successive backup schedule thereby reducing disk space and time.
  • Retention Policies: Users can retain any number of recovery points.
  • Near CDP (Continuous Data Protection): Incremental backup can be scheduled every 15 minutes to ensure the RPO < than 15 minutes.
  • Quick VM recovery to ESXi: Instantly recover the backed up VM to ESXi; the backed up image data will be instantly booted on ESXi.
  • Automated Backup verification: Verifies the recoverability of the backed up images; screenshots of the booted image will be mailed.

Backup and recovery is available for both physical and virtual environments, and granular recovery is also possible.  Vembu makes it possible to scale out storage, secure individual backup jobs with built-in de-duplication, encryption and compression using its own file system called, the VembuHIVE.

The Free edition has proven to be great for both testing or production environments without heavy restrictions or requirements.  Vembu BDR Suite packs a number of useful functions and enhancements into the product, and does so with a user-friendly interface.
