The Next 3 Years

Coming from 20 years in the IT channel, it's been interesting to see what has come from vendors, what the market has dictated, and what is on the horizon.

The next 3 years are going to be really interesting. We'll start to see voice search, synthesized media, AR/VR (augmented reality/virtual reality) all come together. However, what is immediately in front of us is in the AI/ML (artificial intelligence, machine learning) category.

Chatbots have been coming up on platforms, such as Facebook Messenger and Skype and consumer expectations about immediate gratification are not going away. I expect to see more maturity in chatbots as a near term prediction. With that, AI is also maturing in the form of allowing companies to leverage machine learning to improve operations and grow their business. However, AI will still take time to adopt due to its complexity.

Cloud computing, which I've been following for over 7 years now, is at a stage where we have seen the early adopters come through. We are now moving into a next group of adoption where customers are more sophisticated and knowledgeable about what they want. This doesn't mean they know how to achieve it, but it does mean that they are looking at cloud services, such as Desktop as a Service (DaaS), to help solve specific issues. Security will drive growth in DaaS as customers seek turn-key solutions and keep their focus on day-to-day operations of the business.
