Best Execution Venue (B.E.V.) Technologies to Speed Digital Transformation in 2018

Digital transformation has left the station and like time it waits for no business. It is an inescapable truth that every business is becoming a digital business controlled by software, which is the manifestation of these digital transformations. Some of the key reasons driving these transformations are goals to increase competitive differentiation, to create new services or revenue streams, to improve customer experience and to reduce costs through operational efficiencies. But truthfully the main - but seldom-voiced - reason is just plain survival.

There's a lot of anxiety on the part of the business leaders over their digital journeys. Recent Dell research of 4,000 world-wide business leaders says that 45% of them fear that their business will become obsolete in 3-5 years; 48% are not sure what their industry will even look like in 3 years; and 78%, practically all of them, feel threaten by digital startups.

In 2018, as businesses look to align around a digital culture, they will recognize that they need to invest in new approaches and overcome new challenges to remain relevant in the eyes of their customers. One of the key challenges will be distributed data management. In a digital business controlled by software, the data management infrastructure has to change in a fundamental way because data becomes much more distributed. The traditional data management model assumes that all data will be first collected into some central repository (i.e. central body of data) and then processed with applications, services and other business logic (i.e. workloads).

For the digital business, large amounts of data are generated by a much more diverse set of platforms and endpoint types (e.g. phones and gateways). This data collects and forms new bodies of data separate from the central body of data. Acting much like planets do under the laws of physical gravity, the more massive (the amount of data) a body of data the greater its data gravity and thus the more workloads will be attracted to it. Also, the more massive a body of data becomes, the greater its perceived value for analytics.

In 2018, the traditional model of moving large amounts of data back to a central place will not make sense for a digital business. It's expensive, takes too long, impacts workload performance and decreases the data's value.  What will be essential to speeding digital business transformation is the ability to bring processing to the data, to maximize its value. This need to dynamically move processing (workloads) will see the emergence of a new class of distributed computing technologies focused on Best Execution Venue (B.E.V.).

Best Execution Venue is the location and conditions at which any given workload can function at peak performance and efficiency within its environment to achieve a desired outcome. As the architectural possibilities and choices involved in building out a digital business IT infrastructure increase, B.E.V. technologies will be able to dynamically decide where to move workloads to data anywhere in the architecture to meet use-case SLAs and optimize resources.
