Battle for the Cloud - The Scramble to Engage Enterprise Customers

As we wrap 2018, it's a great time to reflect on previous predictions and prognosticate on the year ahead. Fortunately, as IT begins in earnest to adopt cloud, a likely preoccupation in 2019 for both businesses and public cloud providers: "It's the enterprise, stupid." We've done most of the knee-jerk lift and shift to "escape the VMware tax," new and near-new apps were the low-hanging fruit for AWS, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) convinced the world Kubernetes and containers were manageable after all. But now that we're into the real meat of cloud-modernizing critical systems-in 2019, providers such as AWS, Azure, and Google are finding themselves in a scramble to attract the more lucrative, and profitable, enterprise/on-premises customers. And with this trend, tools that help facilitate app migration and detangling will be a focus in 2019. As the hype fades and production workloads shift, tech pros are returning to a great habit-less listening to hype, and more R&D. We've been informed, now we need to learn.

In 2019, I predict public cloud providers will sharpen their initial strategies and tactics to attract enterprise customers, especially those with "real" enterprise complexity. It's likely they'll even reintroduce cloud and related tech with more traditional solution selling to pursue enterprise markets. How will this develop? Keep an eye on adoption rates of Azure and GCP for complex applications and AWS's reaction if the 2018 trend continues. We'll be buying more tech, but hype is being rejected by IT teams wrestling with cloud migrations that share more complexity of their on-premises ancestors.
