Machine Learning & Serverless

After 2018 laid the groundwork for emerging technology, we'll see machine learning and serverless hit their stride in 2019, as enterprises continue to prioritize digital transformation.

Matt Chotin, Sr. Director of Technology Strategy

In 2019, enterprises make the leap with automation in IT.

Enterprises have been combining data from applications, the cloud, the network, and other layers to get an accurate view of its IT environment, but 2019 will be the year enterprises start applying machine learning to that data to solve problems faster and make smarter decisions. Machine learning and automation will unlock new functionality in IT environments in ways that weren't possible in 2018. While the IT environment will remain complex, management of the environment will become easier and more automated by leveraging these tools-reducing the time it takes IT to resolve issues, allowing IT to become more proactive to address customer concerns, and therefore improving both top and bottom line.

Java and .NET will be overthrown as the de-facto languages for serverless technologies.

We will see more and more enterprises adopt new languages like Node.js and Python for building on new technologies like serverless. So far, Java and .NET ruled the roost in enterprises, but the footprint of the new languages will increase by a lot. Serverless functions, like Lambda functions, have so far been predominantly used in development and pre-production environments, but we'll see them move to production workloads this year, especially as Node.js and Python catch on in broader adoption.

Serverless computing is ready for primetime.

The past year saw serverless computing jump to the forefront, but in 2019 is when it will really take off. Enterprises that are not currently using serverless functions will start implementing them and see huge cost savings. IT managers will start finding ways to implement serverless functions to change how they think about, develop and monitor applications. More and more technologies will emerge around serverless to deepen its value and unlock new functionality, and 2019 will see a complementary ecosystem emerge as serverless technologies reach broader adoption.
