Citrix Smart Tools Will End of Life on May 31st 2019

Released back in 2016, Citrix Smart Tools have been used by IT Pros to maintain operational health and availability of Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktop environments.  Smart Tools is a set of cloud-based tools that help speed up and simplify the design, deployment, and management of Citrix solutions across any on-premises or cloud environment.

The Smart Tools included things like:

  • Site Health Checks
  • VDA Health Checks
  • StoreFront Checks
  • Delivery Controller Configuration Checks
  • License Server Checks
  • and more

But now, Citrix has announced that Smart Check has been deprecated and the Smart Tools service will reach End of Life (EOL) on May 31, 2019.  At that time, it was stated that Smart Tools will be removed from Citrix Cloud.  Citrix went on to say that any Smart Tools Agents that are installed on customers' machines will be effectively inactive and therefor should be uninstalled.  All articles in the Smart Tools documentation now display a deprecation notice.

If you are currently running these tools, now is the time to start planning on your replacements.  Citrix has created a table of alternative resources that can be used for each of these deprecated checks.  And after EOL, customers can use those KB articles and tools individually.

Any time tools like this are deprecated and reach an end of life, I always wonder what the larger ramifications are for those organizations still using them right up to the end.   And I often wonder if the parent company of those tools ended things too early.
