VMblog's Expert Interviews: HYCU Talks Making Backup Invisible for Hyper-converged Infrastructures

HYCU, Inc. is a pioneering enterprise software company specializing in data backup, recovery and monitoring for next-generation Enterprise Clouds.  The company recently unveiled the latest release of HYCU for Nutanix (version 4.0), which they dubbed the 'first and only purpose-built backup and recovery solution for Nutanix.'  They also announced that the latest version would make backup 'invisible for hyperconverged infrastructures.'  To find out more about this, VMblog spoke with Subbiah Sundaram, VP of Products at HYCU.

VMblog:  There's been a fair bit of discussion over the past few years of making infrastructure invisible.  How does backup and recovery play into this?

Subbiah Sundaram:  We've seen for more than 15 years, admins, architects and IT leads on the journey to consolidate and simplify their IT infrastructure. As we see it, it is a journey and never a one-stop process. Companies like Nutanix have led the way in helping customers simplify their production infrastructure by creating a brand new category called Hyper-converged Infrastructure (HCI). The backup industry looked at this and said, why don't we do the same for secondary storage?

VMblog:  This has been a busy week I am sure for HYCU with Nutanix .NEXT 19 in Anaheim, how does the newly introduced Nutanix Mine with HYCU play into making backup invisible?

Sundaram:  HCI-based Backup Appliances were a great step forward, but they created their own challenges, i.e. another silo in the datacenter. Also, these HCI-based backup appliances tightly locked software with storage so made it hard for customers to scale in just the right dimension that is required. As we see it, backup solutions need to scale based on the amount of data the customer is trying to backup and the backup storage needs to scale based on the retention the business determines is critical. Today's HCI-based backup appliances, interlock these two requirements and expect customers to scale only in one dimension. Not a great choice.

VMblog:  Can you share any more on what Nutanix Mine with HYCU is, and what it's designed to do to make backup invisible?

Sundaram:  We see a new era emerging where customers get the best and trusted HCI infrastructure they have come to love and a backup software that is built to make backup a service of the platform. That is what Nutanix Mine with HYCU is fundamentally all about. Backup becomes an invisible service of the Nutanix platform.

Nutanix Mine now brings to secondary storage what the company revolutionized for primary storage, and HYCU is right there along with them again. Those keeping score at home will note this isn't the first time we've been first to market with Nutanix either. This follows on a long list of HYCU unique firsts with Nutanix including purpose-built backup and recovery solutions, first tightly-integrated support for AOS, AHV, Files, Volumes and Buckets to new workloads like SAP HANA to emerging technology initiatives such as NearSync.

Nutanix Mine with HYCU is the first tightly-integrated and dedicated solution for users that need the performance and cost advantages of an appliance model. The solution offers a completeness of coverage currently unmatched in the marketplace - making it ideal for enterprise applications and workloads across all Nutanix infrastructure and tightly integrated with Nutanix Volumes as well as Files. Impact to production workloads is also minimized with the power of Nutanix snapshots.

The combined platform provides complete coverage for customer workloads, eliminates the need for a dedicated backup team and delivers management of the entire production and backup infrastructure from one console, with HYCU's natively integrated backup service with one-click simplicity, and application awareness.

Those already familiar with Nutanix will quickly get up and running with Nutanix Mine with HYCU. It uses the Prism interface for management, so no additional training, resources or dedicated teams are required to manage your secondary storage array. Nutanix Mine with HYCU also has a low total cost of ownership (TCO) by offering all-inclusive packaging.

VMblog:  For those interested in learning more about Nutanix Mine with HYCU where can they get information?

Sundaram:  Nutanix Mine with HYCU will be available directly from Nutanix resellers and distributors and for purchase worldwide through HYCU authorized Global Partners, including Ingram MicroPromark, and Carahsoft. Even the purchasing process of secondary storage has been expanded, as Nutanix Mine with HYCU is available as a single SKU to further simplify the ordering process. Previously Nutanix users may have used HYCU for Nutanix and Nutanix Storage Dense nodes to offset unnecessary complexity for cost - now they can get both from a single SKU.
