#KubeCon 2019 Q&A: Wallarm Will Showcase Its Kubernetes-Native Security Solution and Launch a New Product at Booth SE48

kubecon 2019 QA

Are you attending KubeCon 2019 in San Diego in November?  If so, I invite you to add Wallarm to your MUST SEE list of vendors.

KubeCon 2019 is shaping up to be a fantastic event!  And the number of sponsoring vendors at this year's show is extremely impressive as the show continues to grow in scope and size!  One of the companies that will be on VMblog's MUST SEE list this year at the event is Wallarm.  Wallarm is an AI startup focused on security of websites, microservices, and APIs running on public and private clouds. Wallarm platform aligns security and development into a unified pipeline. And their AI engine, together with Wallarm Advanced WAF, detects application context, generates application-specific security rules and vulnerability security tests.

Read this exclusive pre-show interview between VMblog and Wallarm to learn what they have planned for the upcoming KubeCon North America 2019 event and why you need to visit their booth.

VMblog:  As a KubeCon 2019 sponsor, how can people find you at the show this year?

Wallarm:  We will be at: Booth #SE48 as Start-up Sponsors.  The booth will be staffed by our Wallarm specialists.

VMblog:  Is there anything interesting or unique about your booth?  Is there a theme this year?

Wallarm:  We will have schedulable demos, a Wheel of Fortune prize wheel, and of course SHWAGG!  Founder will be onsite for discussion and related event will come, TBD.

VMblog:  If an attendee likes what they see and hear at your booth... what message about your product can you send them back with to sell their boss on your technology?

Wallarm:  Wallarm delivers cloud-native automated security that fits into the overall business landscape. Our solutions make security tooling simple enough for use by DevOps while enabling security teams to focus on strategic issues and policies.

VMblog:  What are some of the reasons why you believe a KubeCon attendee should add you to their MUST SEE list?

Wallarm:  Moving Kubernetes into production reliably and fast relies on security designed for the cloud. Wallarm Cloud-Native WAF delivers native security which scales with K8s and adds little if any latency.

VMblog:  Have you sponsored KubeCon before? If so, what do you like most about this event?  What brings you back as a sponsor?

Wallarm:  Proud members of CNCF, we have sponsored both KubeCon 2018 (Seattle) and KubeCon Europe 2019 (Barcelona). We love KubeCon because it brings together the most forward-thinking professionals and fosters community in a space without vendors and clients. It's an incredible opportunity to grow a fellowship amongst tech professionals who truly want to pioneer cutting edge innovation.

VMblog:  Can you give VMblog readers a sneak peek as to what you will be showing off at your booth?  What should attendees expect to see and hear at your booth?

Wallarm:  We will be showing scheduled demos of kubernetes-native security with Wallarm delivering security automation in development (integrated in CI/CD) as well as run-time.

During the show, we are also excited to launch a new product, working with a new community within CNCF. Can't give you more details just yet - but would love to revisit with you during the show to give more details.

VMblog:  Thinking about your company, give readers a few reasons why your product or service is considered unique.

Wallarm:  Wallarm is a unique security solution set, applying:

  • Advanced machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) to security testing and monitoring
  • Cloud-native technology to scalable solutions for businesses at all levels
  • DevOps contexts to security tools for testing in CI/CD
  • Real-time coverage and low false positives to an easy-to-use UI
  • OWASP Top 10 and hacker insights to automatically updated libraries
  • Data security and compliance with stronger in-system design so data never leaves to the cloud

VMblog:  How does your company and product fit within the container or cloud ecosystem?

Wallarm:  Wallarm Cloud-Native WAF is targeted security for APIs, microservices, and web applications in the cloud. Within Kubernetes environment, Wallarm provides native Kubernetes protection, installing as an enhanced ingress controller or as a sidecar to protect APIs. It integrates into larger toolsets with minimal time for deployment or admin. Our Cloud Native WAF provides native protection for NGINX, GCP, Azure, AWS. Wallarm nodes autoscale with traffic, making it an ideal complement to cloud computing tools and platforms. And, they are installed at the API level to ensure deeper protection for containerized environments.

VMblog:  What would you say to prospective attendees who are thinking about attending KubeCon but aren't sure if it's worth it or not?

Wallarm:  If you want to network with like-minded people who are looking to introduce cloud-first tech in the organizations, KubeCon is the place for you.

VMblog:  What do you think we need to do collectively as an ecosystem to strengthen the industry?

Wallarm:  The industry needs to understand the changes in today's technological environment and work together towards better security as a process, rather than a static toolset. Businesses rely increasingly on APIs, web applications, and microservices that cannot be adequately covered by legacy tools or traditional security practices. Creating tools that employ Machine Learning and AI are the only way businesses can keep up with the data flow. Finding solutions that work with new DevOps lifecycles is fundamental in creating security with real adhesion.

VMblog:  At what stage do you feel we are at with regard to containers?

Wallarm:  Containers are like democracy - there are a bunch of shortcomings but its the best governance and deployment system invented so far. Of course, K8s makes the governance and automation part a whole lot better.

VMblog:  What, if anything, is holding the container market back?  Or what is holding back wider deployment?

Wallarm:  There are issues. People are being improperly or under- trained and educated is one. Legacy applications that are not compatible with microservices is the other major problem.

VMblog:  What do you attribute to KubeCon's growing success this year?

Wallarm:  The rate of technological change coupled with high consumer demands for flexibility and accessibility are moving businesses towards higher reliance on APIs and web applications. The new containerized landscapes provide numerous solutions, but the field is still wet and the ground uncertain. As companies rely heavily on containers, the teams that run them are still learning. Those landscapes are turning over every day, creating new areas to get footing in. KubeCon allows experts and intrepid Kubernetes explorers to create a conversation that will shape the best practices and new technologies for Kubernetes as well as how we think about cloud environments. Without a shared community, no one will really get ahead.

VMblog:  What do you hope to come away with from exhibiting at KubeCon?  What does event success look like to you?

Wallarm:  We are looking to connect with the community and advance the concept of DevSecOps as it relates to microservices environments.

VMblog:  Do you have any tips for first time attendees that you'd like to share?

Wallarm:  KubeCon is a great event that has a tremendous amount to offer. If it's your first time, it can be a touch overwhelming. Understand what you want to get out of the conference. There are a lot of options for your personal Kubecon journey: map out the future of technology, get tips and best practices for moving from sandbox to production, get help filling out the technology stack, etc. Understand your goals and attend those activities first.

VMblog:  Attendees always enjoy a good trade show tchotchke.  Are you guys giving away anything special or interesting this year?

Wallarm:  We will be hosting a spin-the-wheel lottery at our booth this year, with fun and exclusive Wallarm giveaways. We will also have exciting product news. Stay tuned and visit the booth to get information about the new release and the fastest native K8s security. Also, we will have a scheduled demo of Wallarm FAST each day of the expo. Check at the Wallarm booth or Wallarm web-site for the scheduled times.

VMblog:  Are you guys throwing or involved with any type of party during the event?  Can you share the details?

Wallarm:  We are currently organizing an event, but it's yet to be solidified. We really look forward to announcing it.
