NetApp Launches Keystone - Offers Subscription Billing and More

Last week, NetApp made a host of announcements during its annual NetApp Insight conference.  The announcements ranged from new corporate vision and directions, new products and updated product features, new pricing models, and new partnerships.  Together, they painted quite the positive picture for the company as the data storage and management landscape continues to evolve.

One of the most noteworthy moments during the opening keynote session at Insight 2019 was the introduction of something called 'Keynote'.  This vision of Keynote offers a major change, greatly simplifying how any company can procure, have support for, and pay for, NetApp products.

NetApp took a giant leap forward heading into 2020 with the launch of Keynote, which the company bills as simplifying the acquisition of data storage and management technology, whether on-premises or in the cloud.  This new announcement also brings the company in line with the modern trend of moving to subscription billing and the 'as-a-service' movement.

"NetApp Keystone enables you to simplify the business of hybrid cloud data services," said NetApp CEO George Kurian during the opening keynote session.  "It gives you the flexibility and the agility to operate IT to transform your business.  It provides flexible cloud consumption models that make it easy to buy, easy to consume and easy to operate NetApp capability, whether it's on-premises or in the public cloud.  You get to pay for it as a utility, as a subscription, or with a capital purchase."

The overarching goal of Keynote is to transform IT and operate like a cloud, everywhere.  This approach will help NetApp keep pace with the growing competition and remain competitive with some of the newer emerging startups in this space.

With Keystone, NetApp provides its customers with the ability to consume NetApp systems and software on-premises with cloud-like subscription models.  Customers get NetApp solutions delivered as-a-service for a monthly fee, the ability to burst capacity as needed, as well as the flexibility to grow into the public cloud if or when necessary.

Keystone will provide subscription services that are described by the company as being as easy as '1-2-3.'

As far as customers are concerned, there are only three things to consider:

  1. Choose a performance tier (performance, standard or value), depending on the nature of the application.
  2. Pick a storage service type - block, file or object.
  3. Choose who manages it.  You, NetApp or a channel partner.

Even the on-premises option can be managed by NetApp with "capacity-as-a-service," explained Kurian.

For customers who want to continue to own and operate NetApp technology in the traditional sense of purchasing, NetApp has simplified the experience.  It is much easier to buy, optimize and grow with: streamlined configuration and quoting processes; cloud-like service guarantees for efficiency, performance and availability; AI-driven insights to optimize system health; and dynamic scaling of systems node-by-node or to the public cloud.

If a customer wants their data to be in one or more public cloud offerings, such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud, Keystone makes it straightforward with all options covered.

"By the end of 2020, three quarters of our customers will be hybrid multi-cloud," said Kurian.

To help with the transition and scope out which options make the most sense for your particular environment, NetApp is making an online tool available to help with assessments and recommendations

The subscription version of Keystone is available immediately, while a reseller model through NetApp’s distributors will roll out later in the year.
