VMblog Expert Interview: SIOS Sets New Standard for High Availability and Automation for SAP S/4HANA Environments

interview sios meltzer

SIOS has just announced a new standard for High Availability and automation for SAP S/4HANA environments with the latest releases of its SIOS Protection Suite for Linux for MSPs, CSPs and enterprises.  To learn more, VMblog spoke with Jonathan Meltzer, Director of Product Management at SIOS Technology.

VMblog:  What are the top concerns business have about maintaining application availability in SAP S/4 HANA environments?

Jonathan Meltzer:  SAP S/4HANA environments are business critical applications for many organizations. They are often the most important application for keeping their businesses running consistently and efficiently.  Even a few minutes of downtime can be extremely costly.  There are many different ways of providing high availability for SAP, and they vary greatly on whether them meet an enterprise's availability and uptime requirements.

VMblog:  Why is HA protection in SAP S/4HANA environments so challenging?

Meltzer:  These environments comprise multiple services that need to be maintained in the right locations and started up in the right order. Manually configuring and managing clusters in these complex environments can be time-consuming and prone to human errors that increase the risk of catastrophic downtime and data loss.

VMblog:  What advantages does SIOS Protection Suite for Linux clustering software offer over other approaches?

Meltzer:  SIOS Protection Suite version 9.5 has application intelligence that makes creating and managing high availability clusters in complex SAP HANA environments easy and error free. It includes tools and utilities that automate configuration, validate user input, provide application monitoring and ensure failover automatically complies with application best-practices. It also features new system cloning capabilities that enable easy deployment of SIOS clusters to protect any application using consistent, predefined settings and integrated best practices.   This type of high availability software meets customers' needs for fast failover to reduce downtime and provide protection against data loss, while not being tied to any specific hardware, software, or cloud platform.

VMblog:  What is new in version 9.5 that customers will benefit from the most?

Meltzer:  It's important to note that SIOS Protection Suite for Linux isn't just for HANA - we have application intelligence built in for SQL Server, Oracle, and a wide range of other applications as well.  The SAP S/4 HANA ease of use and automation top the list. We also added a new system cloning functionality that makes large-scale deployment of any SIOS Protection Suite for Linux cluster easy.

VMblog:  Who will benefit from the system cloning functionality?

Meltzer:  Managed service providers, cloud vendors, and large enterprises want a fast, easy way to deploy a cluster in compliance with best practices and the ability to deploy large-scale rollouts of multiple clusters with the same or similar configurations.

VMblog:  What are the components of the SIOS Protection Suite for Linux?

Meltzer:  SIOS Protection Suite for Linux enables businesses to create a high availability clusters quickly and easily to protect any application, in a tightly integrated combination of failover clustering, continuous application monitoring, data replication, and configurable recovery policies to protect business-critical applications from downtime and disasters.

  • SIOS LifeKeeper - Flexible failover clustering software that monitors the entire application stack and orchestrates application-aware failover
  • SIOS DataKeeper- Fast, efficient host-based, block level data replication for mirroring local storage in a SANless cluster configuration or replicating to remote locations or cloud for disaster recovery.
  • Application Recovery Kits (ARKs) - Extensions to SIOS LifeKeeper that provide application intelligence.

VMblog:  Tell us more about Application Recovery Kits?

Meltzer:  ARKs integrate with applications to provide intelligent methods for simplifying setup, automating manual tasks, and handling diverse application recovery events. They detect application level failures and ensure applications-specific best practices are maintained throughout the failover process.
