As Result of Remote Working, 61% of Enterprise Workers Struggle to Find Information

Sinequa says that enterprise workers are having greater difficulty finding information when working remotely. In addition to these challenges, a recent UK research study found that knowledge workers in large enterprises now search for information 8 times a day, spending more than 5 minutes carrying out each search, equivalent to an average of 44 minutes per day, per employee.

For many organizations, the trend toward a more digital workplace has enabled the smooth transition to widespread remote working [due to the COVID-19 pandemic]. However, the downside has been that conversations and documents are increasingly scattered and siloed across enterprise systems. Finding information to carry out job functions is becoming harder than ever for knowledge workers. Enterprises are increasingly looking to implement digital workplace solutions that help employees get their work done.

"For modern enterprises, providing ready access to critical information often equates to worker efficiency and the bottom line," said Scott Parker, director of product marketing at Sinequa. "By reducing the time it takes for knowledge workers to find necessary information to complete job tasks, we can increase overall productivity which may translate into boosting profitability."

The challenges often begin when colleagues go on vacation or take time off. According to Sinequa's research more than two-thirds (68%) of workers have struggled to find information they need when a member of the team is not working. This is not a new problem but working remotely from home has placed additional barriers for knowledge workers as they search for information.

Although 40% of respondents reported being more productive when working from home, 59% of knowledge workers believed they could be more productive if they had better access to information. [This is corroborated by a prior Sinequa study of senior decision makers which found that 55% of organizations wish to implement digital workplaces to increase employee performance].

Of the 61% of workers who said it is harder to find information when working remotely, the top three reasons were:

  • Systems are slower at home (25%)
  • Information is dispersed in many locations (24%)
  • Colleagues are unavailable to answer questions (24%)
