StackPulse Launches Free Edition of Reliability Platform to Prevent Site Outages

Citing the need to respond better to outages affecting cloud services, StackPulse launched the free-to-use edition of its reliability platform. The new free edition, available immediately from StackPulse's website, allows software developers, DevOps, and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) teams to respond to software outages, automate manual operations, and deliver more reliable software services to end users.

Recent outages that affected sites like GitHub and LinkedIn underscore the huge problem of reliability due to the need for enterprises to rapidly build and deploy apps in the cloud. "Every company that runs software services will suffer outages - that's a given," said Leonid Belkind, CTO of StackPulse. "This is why it's important to build a culture focused on reliability at every step of the process."

According to StackPulse, ensuring reliability is both an application and an organizational issue. To address the reliability of applications, StackPulse believes teams should apply DevOps and SRE principles to the on-call process. When an outage occurs, StackPulse automatically executes what it calls playbooks that investigate the underlying cause, delivers context to human responders, and performs remediation actions as needed.  According to Belkind, a single automated playbook eliminates over 400 hours of on-call work a year for the average customer, resulting in a corresponding reduction in customer-facing downtime identifying, responding to, and resolving service incidents and outages.

"Delivering reliable services also requires a cultural change," said Belkind. "You have to be open-minded, identify key stakeholders to drive the process, and define short-term to long-term goals. You also must be willing to question the organizational ‘sacred cows' that might be in the way or grind the entire transformation effort into dust."

The release of the free edition comes shortly after the year-old company exited stealth, announcing in January more than $28 million in funding across two rounds led by GGV Capital and Bessemer Venture Partners.

The StackPulse Reliability Platform is also available in the enterprise edition. More information is available at StackPulse.com.
