Internet Computer Decentralized Applications Have Nearly 250k Users Just 10 Weeks Since Launch

The DFINITY Foundation has revealed that there are nearly 250k users of dapps, open internet services, DeFi, pan-industry platforms, and websites built on the Internet Computer. This is only 10 weeks since the "Genesis" launch of the blockchain network on May 7, 2021.

Dominic Williams, Chief Scientist and Founder of the DFINITY Foundation says "The immediate adoption of the Internet Computer by entrepreneurs and developer teams has been extraordinary, where hundreds of amazing projects have already taken advantage of the world's first blockchain running at web speed with internet scale. Entrepreneurs are also building what was previously impossible on a public blockchain, for example, OpenChat, a decentralized messaging service is running completely on-chain, as well as blending DeFi into their service. Entrepreneurs are also taking advantage of drastically lower storage costs and gas fees, compared to legacy blockchains, to build advanced decentralized versions of Dropbox, NFT marketplaces, exchanges, etc - and for the first-time, completely on-chain without the need for legacy IT such as required by other blockchain projects. And the long awaited rise of on-chain tokenized social media, which many of us in the blockchain industry have been envisioning for years, is already taking form in dapps such as DSCVR and Distrikt, and already driving rapid DAU growth. Our estimate is that the Internet Computer will have significantly greater DAU than the rest of blockchain by the end of year."

The Internet Computer is the blockchain fastest to have 500 developers building on it.

8% of those (40) have received grants to aid in the development of their projects.

Decentralized versions of Reddit, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Medium, Dropbox, Trello, as well as DeFi are already up and running with users on the Internet Computer. Canisters (smart contracts) on the Internet Computer are up 330% in 6 weeks, from June 6, 2021 - 337 canisters to July 21, 2021 1,491 canisters. The Internet Computer has also surpassed +107M blocks generated as the network scales to host more Canister smart contracts. Block count speaks to both the speed and capacity of the Internet Computer.

Harrison Hines, Co-Founder and CEO of Fleek says "People immediately think of all the cool use cases of Web2 and say I want to build that but on the Internet Computer. We are definitely at a stage where a lot of people are focusing on big use cases, especially ones that were not possible on Ethereum or other platforms. Those other platforms, aren't necessarily ideal for building applications specifically on the social and content side". Hines also noted that "It's very favourable to entrepreneurs right now, in my opinion to start a project in the Internet Computer space because I do not believe you would have a hard time fundraising."

Below are some of the exciting Internet Computer projects already with active users, and examples of the true potential of Web 3.0.

  • Fleek, a Web 3.0 venture studio which provides decentralized hosting and storage options to developers. Starting with hosting websites, Fleek plans to rebuild the web's core services as open internet services on the Internet Computer.
  • DSCVR, an open version of the "front page of the internet," runs completely on-chain and launched within the first week of the Internet Computer network going live.
  • OpenChat, an open, decentralized chat platform that gives users control over their data.
  • Distrikt, a decentralized, professional social media network that puts open governance and community ownership in the hands of its users.
  • WeAct.chat, a social activism platform that's designed to support communication, collaboration, and the crowdsourcing of work.
  • Bunchd, a membership platform that enables creators to deploy their own full-featured subscription sites to serve large niche audiences.
  • Canlista, a listing directory for Internet Computer software applications and services, providing tooling and a registry that enables developers to easily find and build on the canisters of other developers.
  • Nuance, an open, decentralized blogging platform.
  • DPunks, a marketplace for collectible NFTs on the Internet Computer, akin to the popular
  • Kaban, a decentralized project management tool.
  • IC Drive, an open, decentralized file storage system.
