SC22 Q&A: Viking Enterprise Solutions Will Showcase Its High-performance Storage Platforms and Demo Its Cloud Native Obsidian (CNO) Software Solution

Ready for SC22?  Attending the show?  Make sure to visit with Viking Enterprise Solutions.

SC22, the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis, takes place November 13-18, 2022 in Dallas, TX at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center or via the digital experience.

Read this exclusive interview between VMblog and Greg McNeil, VP Product Management and Product Marketing, Viking Enterprise Solutions.

VMblog: To kick things off, give VMblog readers a quick overview of the company.

Greg McNeil:  Viking Enterprise Solutions (VES) is a market leader in high-performance storage platforms for hyperscale and enterprise data centers worldwide. Leveraging our portfolio of proven product designs, we provide advanced data center products, including NVMe flash memory and disk-based storage server appliances, JBOD storage systems and related products for a variety of storage and data center applications including rack scale solutions.

As part of Sanmina, a world-class and global electronics manufacturing company, VES provides end-to-end, design and manufacturing solutions for both platform-based and fully customized data center products. From our US-based design and development team, we provide a full array of services from early product conceptualization, through design, product validation and worldwide product certifications. In addition, we support all phases of product manufacturing, including NPI, support for unique product configurations, RMA and product end-of-life support.

VMblog:  What will you be showing off at the show this year? And how can attendees find you at the show?

McNeil:  Come visit our booth #727, where we'll have our key products and platforms on display and a number of our team members in the booth to share more details.

One demo we'll highlight is of our Cloud Native Obsidian (CNO) software solution. CNO is a comprehensive, on-premise cloud storage solution based on Cloud Native architecture. Optimized with multi-protocol support, CNO provides local storage capacity with lower latency performance and no complicated storage tiers, when compared to cloud-based storage.

VMblog: What is your message to SC22 attendees?  What message should they walk away with after visiting your booth?

McNeil:  Our high-performance solutions provide performance-driven storage for high-demand applications. Our solutions are also high density, providing best-in-class storage options for highest capacities and efficiency.

VMblog:  What market needs or problems is your company addressing?  And how?

McNeil:  Enterprises are struggling with the exponential growth of unstructured data. Through our portfolio of advanced data center products, we are helping enterprises solve these data challenges.

When it comes to hyperscalers and HPC, storage performance is the critical driver.

Our 2U, 24 U.2 drive family of products consists of high-availability and high-performance solutions. Each of the systems are supported with the latest AMD CPUs, with single CPU, dual motherboard configurations. Each system supports either dual port or single port U.2 NVMe PCIe Gen 4 drives and various PCIe Gen 4 I/O configurations.

One particular challenge for many enterprises is the large, unpredictable, recurring fees being paid to public cloud providers - all the while dealing with performance, security, control, continuity and complexity issues. Our economical, cost-controlled Cloud Native Obsidian solution gives companies a flexible storage alternative to public cloud solutions to enable complete control of mission-critical, frequently accessed data.

VMblog:  Is your company launching anything new at the show?  Can you give us a sneak peek?

McNeil:  We will be showing our newest storage/server motherboard featuring a single, 4th Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable processor, formerly codenamed Sapphire Rapids. This is a pre-release viewing, and we can share in-depth product detail under NDA after the show.

Additionally, we will have numerous products on display in addition to our 4U 102 HDD JBOD solution. This is the densest JBOD solution on the market, packing 102 LFF drives in a 4U platform that is less than 1 meter deep, including its cable management arm (CMA).

VMblog:  In what way does your company operate within the world of HPC?

McNeil:  Our portfolio of high-performance, high-density storage solutions offer high data availability to hyperscalers.

VMblog: What are some of the key takeaways of your solution that SC22 conference goers should be aware of?  And what sets you apart from the competition?

McNeil:  We create some of the most innovative storage systems in the market. Specifically, we offer performance-driven storage servers for high-performance use cases. And we leverage emerging technologies to provide a competitive advantage. As a division of Sanmina, we are uniquely positioned to leverage our parent company's global manufacturing and supply chain leadership, technology and engineering. This rich heritage and legacy have propelled VES to become a key supplier and strategic partner to some of the top 10 CSPs in the world. We have also made a name for ourselves by providing unrivaled expertise and support.

VMblog:  I'm sure the keynotes will discuss big pictures, but what trends are you seeing that we should be aware of in 2023?

McNeil:  Current supply chain constraints, increasing bandwidth requirements and a continued focus on efficiency, cost and performance will all drive key developments moving forward. Key trends to watch include:

  • Adoption of SAS-4 storage protocols will occur faster than initially expected.
  • 3.5 inch spinning discs will continue to remain dominant.
  • Increased uptake in E1 and E3 drive form factors.
  • Gradual transition to PCIe 5 standards.

VMblog:  Is your company giving away any interesting tchotchke?

McNeil:  We are always sharing knowledge. Come by the booth and ask us, we might have a special surprise for you.

VMblog:  As a show sponsor, do you have any tips for attendees to better prepare for the conference?

McNeil:  Plan 60-70% of your meetings and exhibitor focus in advance but leave room for spontaneity as you never know what you might find that relates to some future project or problem you are trying to solve.

Look forward to seeing everyone at the show.
