The Market for Private Networks Will Continue to Grow Due to Increased Customer Demand and Enhanced Service Provider Capabilities

By Stephen Douglas, Head of Market Strategy, Spirent Communications

In 2023, we saw an uptick in Enterprise Private Networks and we expect considerable growth next year, primarily driven by increasing demand from businesses, government and military customers.

Last year's early adopters of commercial Private Networks typically saw a return on investment in less than six months. Some 5G-enabled applications even led to impressive business results - minimizing downtime and boosting productivity. The most significant gains were observed in the following sectors:

  • Ultra-High-Definition Video Monitoring: Private Networks with 'AI vision' have numerous potential applications. They have proven particularly beneficial in scenarios like factory supply line monitoring and fault detection. Ultra-HD video monitoring can identify defects in manufactured components in real-time, which might otherwise go unnoticed. These solutions can prevent expensive production mishaps or damage to manufacturing equipment, saving substantial repair costs and downtime.
  • Augmented Reality (AR): Many large enterprises, including service providers, incur enormous expenses for remote maintenance. Infrastructure such as communication networks, pipelines, power grids, and others spread over a wide area, often need expert engineers at remote locations for repairs, leading to days of costly downtime and reduced productivity. However, Private Networks supporting AR enable on-site personnel to use AR for tasks like overlaying schematics on equipment and carrying out real-time guided repairs. Such use cases empower local employees with lesser skills to resolve more issues, quickly and cost-effectively.
  • Government and Military: Military organizations have been looking at 5G Private Networks and AR tools to assist with field maintenance and training activities. For instance, forward operating bases need to deploy and maintain machinery and vehicles, without the luxury of waiting for an expert engineer. With Private Networks and AR, military and government agencies can extend enhanced capabilities and insights anywhere, even to the remotest, most challenging locations.
