Yugabyte announced YugabyteDB 2.25, the latest version of its
open-source, high-performance distributed SQL database, which now boasts
complete compatibility with PostgreSQL 15 and a wealth of new features.
This significant milestone, currently available as a tech preview,
reinforces Yugabyte's commitment to the popular PostgreSQL database and
provides customers with the freedom to safely upgrade or downgrade to
the major PostgreSQL version most compatible with their data
infrastructure.
"Although PostgreSQL remains the most popular database among developers,
a factor that slows down adoption of newer PostgreSQL features or
innovations is the risks upgrading can bring, especially the potential
impact on existing applications," said Karthik Ranganathan, co-founder
and co-CEO, Yugabyte. "We have put significant time and resources into
developing an efficient process and reusable framework for quickly
adopting future PostgreSQL versions. This includes seamless fallback and
downgrade options that eliminate disruption for YugabyteDB users as
they explore and innovate using the latest PostgreSQL features. This new
release is the culmination of a long-term project
to ensure customers benefit from the innovative features included in
later versions of PostgreSQL, and are well placed to quickly and
seamlessly adopt future PostgreSQL versions."
PostgreSQL released version 17 in September 2024, but most enterprises
still run their production on PostgreSQL 14 (or below) due to its proven
compatibility with their existing tools and operating systems.
Yugabyte 2.25 is well-placed to meet customers wherever they are in
their PostgreSQL lifecycle. Enterprises can now easily upgrade to the
latest PostgreSQL version but also seamlessly revert back to a previous
version if needed, without application disruption. This gives them the
confidence and flexibility to explore the latest PostgreSQL features and
innovations without worrying about disruption or downtime.
Committed to delivering the most PostgreSQL-compatible distributed
database on the market to developers, YugabyteDB 2.25 provides:
-
The Latest PostgreSQL Advancements: Access a wealth of new
features introduced by the PostgreSQL community between versions 11.2
and 15, including generated columns, foreign keys on partitioned tables,
and multi-range aggregates for enhanced data modeling and querying.
-
Seamless Upgrades and Downgrades: Quickly make online downgrades
and upgrades to newer PostgreSQL versions, eliminating downtime and
ensuring business continuity, disaster recovery, and uninterrupted
change data capture (CDC).
-
Unparalleled Scalability and Resilience: Experience a distributed
architecture, which offers unparalleled scalability, high availability,
and global data distribution with exceptional performance.
-
Enterprise-Grade Features: Discover robust features, often only
found in ‘enterprise' versions, including zero-downtime upgrades,
seamless backups and restores (PITR clone), and efficient disaster
recovery, while maintaining low-latency transactions in geographically
distributed environments.
"We are excited about YugabyteDB's Postgres 15 launch and, in
particular, looking forward to the many added features which will help
as we migrate from SQL Server to YugabyteDB," commented Kevin Visscher,
Software Engineer, New Black.
