Native Hybrid Cloud and On-Premises IaaS Will Become Entrenched in 2018
Cloud has reached that stage of maturity where the wheat is rapidly being separated from the chaff, and the way forward is becoming more clearly apparent, as are the technologies that will pave that pathway.
Native Hybrid Cloud
You can argue for or against the public cloud until the proverbial cows come home, just so long as while you’re arguing, you do the smart thing and keep your options wide open with truly native hybrid cloud.
Even as we head into 2018, however, “hybrid” is still not a clear term for many enterprises. This will change definitively in 2018. As companies find themselves challenged with multiple siloed cloud environments amid growing demand for flexibility, lack of the latter will drive understanding of and demand for true hybrid cloud.
Of course, one of the key considerations in creating a true hybrid cloud that it remains “native” and compatible to the public cloud. It is this cross-cloud compatibility that offers enterprises the ability to scale between environments to accommodate specific business needs and to easily move applications between cloud environments without any adjustments or re-writes to applications. This freedom from lock-in of any kind is at the core of hybrid cloud’s appeal.
On-Premises IaaS
Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) has evolved far beyond the virtualization of infrastructure alone. Indeed, in 2018 enterprises will increasingly see their ever-more cloud-savvy internal customers demand more advanced layers of service from IT. This will play out as increases in demand for higher-level application building blocks, self-service on-demand consumption, automated infrastructure provisioning and management via the Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) model, and simple and effective application scaling, all of which will transform the virtualized environment into one IaaS.
To leverage existing infrastructure to achieve this level of IaaS on-premises, while retaining the ability to effortlessly scale between private and public cloud, requires the kind of next-level compatible cloud services.
Cloud, public or private, is no longer a hard sell – the technology has matured, the benefits are self-evident, and there are sufficient glowing testimonials to sway even the toughest customers. Among these case studies however, is a multitude of cautionary tales of death via vendor lock-in. The model of the future, fashioned by the lessons of the past, is clearly native hybrid cloud powered by IaaS on-premises.
