In this data and information age, how can we change how humans access and discover meaningful data?  One company, Nuclia, is on a mission to help organizations of all sizes to turn unstructured data into knowledge, and help developers build AI-powered search engines.

To learn more, VMblog reached out to industry expert Ramon Navarro, CTO of Nuclia.

VMblog:  As we begin, can you provide some context for our readers by explaining what Nuclia does?

Ramon Navarro:  Nuclia is an end-to-end API capable of connecting to any data source and automatically indexing its content regardless of format or language. Companies can perform multilingual semantic searches on their entire unstructured data set, turning unstructured data into knowledge while owning their own data.

VMblog:  What problem does Nuclia solve?

Navarro:  Companies have a huge challenge when dealing with unstructured data. Let me try to explain fast:

  • A bit more than 80% of organizations’ data is unstructured spread in a lot of different data sources: from a Sharepoint, to any file repository, in Zoom…
  • Data is in different formats: PDF, docs, videos, PowerPoints, txt, html…
  • Data is usually in different languages.

Indexing and processing this data to make sense of it, is the huge problem we are solving.

At Nuclia we have developed an API able to index and understand data from any data source, in almost any format and language.

While indexing, Nuclia’s API detects the key insights from  data, such as names of people, products, dates, quantities, legal clauses, etc. It also indexes all text, all paragraphs, content from videos and then it vectorizes data.

The result of all this data understanding and indexing  is the ability to perform multilingual semantic searches on top of unstructured data.

VMblog:  Can you talk about the developer experience you get when you use Nuclia?

Navarro:  Nuclia is designed and developed by developers. We try to keep things simple yet flexible to fit all potential use cases.

A great part of Nuclia is open-source, like NucliaDB, which is the foundation of Nuclia and the first Unstructured search database. NucliaDB lets teams use their own vectorization and normalization algorithms while providing storage, indexing, and querying. We believe Nuclia will become the underpinning of modern businesses and will unleash powerful insights that simply aren’t accessible today. Its impact will be pervasive, reaching every vertical from media and retail to healthcare and finance and much more.

VMblog:  You recently raised venture funding. Who are your investors and how do you plan to use those funds?

Navarro:  Yes, we’ve raised a $5.4M seed round with Crane.vc and Elaia. We are extremely honored that they believe in what we are building.

Funds will be used to keep developing and stabilizing our technology, keep working and developing our open-source parts and growing the tech team.

VMblog:  Can you provide a general product roadmap for Nuclia over the next 12 months?

Navarro:  Sure! In the next 12 months we’ll be very focused on letting companies train their own AI models: their own NER detection, their own Q&A models able to answer specific data-specific questions and also their own data auto-classification model. We will also be very focused on developing Nulcia Desktop Application, a desktop application that will let, literally, integrate any unstructured data-source with Nuclia.
