What is the VMware ESXi Server and Its Role in the VMware Suite?

The VMware ESXi server is an ultra-tiny bare-metal type-1 hypervisor that’s responsible for running countless virtual machines in some of the largest VDI deployments and other virtual environments on the planet. It’s an important piece in VMware’s suite of products, for sure – but what exactly does it do?
