BforeAI released new research from its PreCrime Labs team identifying a cluster of 16 unauthorized mobile apps on Google Play that exploit fan anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6). With the game set to launch on November 19, researchers warn that this type of “hype-jacking” activity typically grows sharply in the weeks surrounding a major release.
Rockstar Games has not released any official companion app, map tool or mobile version of GTA 6, which means every app in the cluster is unauthorized. Yet many of the listings closely mimic Rockstar’s official branding, reusing the pink and purple “VI” logo and palm-tree artwork from the game’s teaser campaign. One app, titled “GTA 6 Mobile,” is published under the developer name “GTA Mobile Games” and has recorded more than 10,000 downloads.
“Blockbuster launches create a window where fan excitement moves faster than platform defenses,” said Rishika Desai, Security Analyst at BforeAI. “What we found isn’t a handful of fan projects. It’s a repeatable production pattern: shared templates, shared distribution settings and publishers running multiple listings at once. That tells us this will scale as release day gets closer, and consumers deserve to know what to look out for.”
Key findings include:
- Broad reach, young audience: The 16 apps span more than 10 developer accounts and collectively claim distribution in up to 165 countries. Several carry “Everyone” or PEGI 3 ratings, putting children squarely in the target audience.
- Paying for nothing: Several listings enable in-app purchases despite there being no released game to support maps, cheat codes or guides, creating a risk of consumers paying for content that cannot deliver what it promises.
- Coordinated templates: Nominally unrelated developer accounts share identical country-distribution lists, similar titles and matching iconography, signaling an organized, low-cost pipeline rather than independent creators.
Suspected links to financial scams: At least two listings embed search terms such as “gta6 forex” and “gta6 trading,” suggesting possible overlap with financial-scam search campaigns. BforeAI notes this connection is still under investigation.
Recommended next to the real thing: Google Play’s “Similar apps” feature has surfaced unofficial listings directly beside Rockstar’s genuine “GTA V: The Manual” app, adding to confusion at the moment of download.
Tips for fans and parents:
- Until Rockstar announces otherwise, assume any “GTA 6” companion, map, cheat or countdown app is unofficial.
- Check the developer name carefully. Official Rockstar apps are published by Rockstar Games.
- Be cautious of in-app purchases promising early access, maps or cheats for a game that hasn’t launched.
- Review app ratings and permissions before younger family members install anything.
For security teams, BforeAI recommends flagging the identified package names, alerting on new listings that follow the “GTA 6/VI” plus companion, map, guide, cheats or countdown naming pattern, and watching for apps that pair gaming keywords with financial terms like “forex,” “trading” or “invest.”
