The way we work will be easier in 2024 – as long as it’s secure

By Vince Padua, Axway Chief Product Officer, Axway

AI, LLMs, and low-code/no-code integration will simplify work life and improve the customer experience, says Vince Padua, Axway Chief Production Officer, but these advantages will need to be balanced by addressing concomitant security issues, one of which has prompted a U.S. executive order.

Let’s be smart about artificial intelligence

The accelerated shift towards hybrid cloud integration solutions has been a significant development in 2023. The need for businesses to seamlessly connect applications, data, and processes across various environments (on-premises, multi-cloud, and edge) has grown considerably. Additionally, the emergence of AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) has unlocked many new use cases and could drastically improve the customer experience.

As we move into 2024, we can anticipate stories about the importance of data security and privacy, mainly as integration platforms handle sensitive data across multiple environments. We also expect that AI will see accelerated enterprise adoption and profoundly affect mundane enterprise tasks ranging from simple data handling and manipulation to user experience enhancement and extensive business process optimization.

Certainly, increased adoption of cloud-based services and applications will accelerate in 2024. This will need to be balanced against the zero trust security requirements that have been outlined in the sweeping U.S. executive order on AI (EO 14028), which establishes rules in the coming year on public key infrastructure (PKI) to manage digital certifications, use of certification authority, and monitoring of certification revocation and expiration. Solutions like Axway’s Validation Authority Suite will help organizations with a large certificate footprint meet requirements.

Greater effectiveness in role-based efforts

The trends that I expect to gain traction in 2024 are the use of AI and ML to automate more tasks in the integration process, such as data mapping, data transformation, and error handling. This can make the integration process faster and easier and free up IT teams to focus on other tasks.

To further simplify work, low-code and no-code development platforms make it easier for non-technical users to integrate applications, business partners, and data. This is becoming increasingly important as businesses need to be able to integrate more and more applications and partners across their ecosystem.

The future of cryptocurrencies looking a little cryptic

Here’s what I see falling out of favor in 2024:

  • Cryptocurrencies and NFTs. The cryptocurrency and NFT markets have been highly volatile and speculative in recent years, leading to significant investor losses.
  • Traditional IT security approaches. Traditional IT security approaches focus on protecting the network’s perimeter. However, these approaches are not practical against modern cyberattacks. In 2024, businesses will likely adopt more proactive and layered security approaches.
  • Metaverse platforms. The metaverse is a virtual world still in its early stages of development. While there is a lot of potential for the metaverse, it is unclear how widely adopted it will become in the near future.
  • Web 3. This decentralized version of the internet is still under development. Web3 projects often rely on cryptocurrencies and NFTs, which could hurt their adoption if the cryptocurrency and NFT markets continue to struggle.
