Five Predictions for Storing, Protecting, and Managing Data in 2024

By Andy Hill, Executive Vice President & Pre-Sales Worldwide, Nexsan

In 2024, Nexsan will hit a milestone few achieve in the storage industry – 25 years of helping customers securely store, protect and manage data. As a company, Nexsan is a veteran in this business, studiously paying attention to customers’ evolving needs.

Looking forward, here’s what we’re hearing will be necessary to organizations in 2024.

1. Repatriate and reassess

There’s a real movement toward cloud repatriation-bringing data and applications back to on-premises infrastructure from cloud resources-especially as organizations face inflated cloud costs. Organizations will grow more bearish in thinking of the cloud as the only answer to their infrastructure needs and more interested in optimizing their workloads, security needs, and budgets.

2. Immutability for protection from ransomware

With ransomware ever on the rise and bad actors finding new ways to penetrate defenses and hold data hostage, organizations increasingly need truly immutable data stores for protection.

3. HDD holds on

While solid-state disk drives get the most mindshare, traditional hard disk drives (HDDs) continue to evolve towards higher capacities and improved efficiency. With the growth in unstructured data and data archives, cloud remorse, and extended retention policies, we see HDD continuing to play an essential role as a complement to solid-state options such as NVMe for organizations.

4. Increasing adoption of NVMe and NVMe-oF

We expect to see accelerated adoption of Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) and NVMe over Fabric (NVMe-oF), which offer faster data access and reduced latency. Once they are in the domain of ultra-high-performance storage, they will find their place in other workloads such as digital content and streaming, virtualization, online databases, and more.

5. Environmental sustainability

Following the warmest year on record for most of the world, environmental considerations will drive innovations in energy-efficient, eco-friendly storage and compute. Most companies want to reduce their environmental impact and value the triple bottom line of people, planet, and profit. Storage options that can decrease energy consumption per TB will become increasingly important.
