Industry executives and experts share their predictions for 2026.  Read them in this 18th annual VMblog.com series exclusive.

By Sergio Gago, Chief Technology Officer at Cloudera

After years of rapid cloud expansion, AI acceleration, and shifting architectural philosophies, 2026 is emerging as a pivotal turning point, a year defined not by a single breakthrough but by the convergence of many. The industry is transitioning from fragmented data strategies to harmonized ones, where infrastructure, intelligence, and governance work together as a coordinated whole. This marks the beginning of the Era of Convergence: a phase where cloud and on-premises environments, humans and agents, and classical and quantum computing evolve together rather than in isolation.

The Era of Convergence Begins

2026 will be remembered as the first year of true convergence. After the Era of the Cloud and the earlier Era of Control, what comes next is a hybrid reality where cloud and data centers coexist through unified control planes.

Enterprises now recognize that some workloads will stay on-prem for sovereignty, latency, or cost while others will thrive in the public cloud. The shift is that users will no longer care where a workload runs, only that it runs securely, efficiently, and compliantly. Governance, orchestration, and AI intelligence will increasingly transcend the underlying infrastructure.

Efficiency and Energy-Aware AI Become the New Frontier

AI infrastructure costs are rising, and global energy demands are surging. Companies now need to determine the right size AI model for their needs, as simply selecting the largest ones will not suffice. We will see wider use of smaller, domain-specific, and edge-optimized models along with advances in quantization, pruning, and adaptive compute.

Energy will become a first-class KPI. Just as data gravity once dictated where compute resources lived, we will now see energy gravity, where computation shifts toward the most cost-effective and cleanest available power sources. AI will be judged not only by accuracy but by efficiency per kilowatt-hour.

The Rise of the Data-First, Self-Improving Enterprise

2023 through 2025 were defined by experimentation. In 2026, enterprises will return to fundamentals, including data quality, lineage, observability, and governance. AI without a strong data pipeline is simply the automation of noise.

This focus will give rise to Agentic Skill Pipelines where AI not only consumes data but improves it. These systems will autonomously fix schema drifts, detect bias, optimize cost, and maintain data ecosystems as living, learning systems. Data pipelines will shift from static back-office plumbing to dynamic, intelligent flows, forming the early blueprint of the True AI Lakehouse.

At the same time, companies will begin building Digital Workforces, fleets of domain-specific agents governed under corporate policies and audited like employees.

Sovereign AI and the Return of Governance

As nations and industries seek greater control over data and AI models, sovereign AI will transition from a political debate to an architectural requirement. Europe, South America, and the Asia-Pacific region are already developing national AI clouds, a trend that will grow rapidly.

In 2026, public clouds, sovereign clouds, and private data centers will converge under unified policy engines that guarantee compliance, transparency, and interoperability. Governance will evolve from a defensive posture to a strategic advantage, defining how enterprises scale and where their AI models can be effectively deployed.

The Age of Interoperable Intelligence

As digital agents proliferate, interoperability will become essential. Enterprises will need a common language for agents that enables CRM agents, finance agents, and support agents to collaborate securely across platforms and providers. Organizations will increasingly rely on data estates and agents from multiple vendors.

Frameworks and specifications such as MCP and A2A will mature, enabling multi-agent communication across systems, clouds, and geographies. The industry will move from isolated AI applications to federated intelligence, where insights flow responsibly through governed APIs and shared protocols.

A Unified Future

The story of data has always been about connection, from distributed clusters to cloud elasticity, and now to AI’s distributed intelligence. The Era of Convergence isn’t about choosing sides: cloud vs. on-prem, human vs. machine, classical vs. quantum. It’s about uniting them under a shared architecture of trust, efficiency, and intelligence.

2026 marks the moment this vision begins to materialize, a world where data, AI, and energy coexist harmoniously, powering not just machines but meaningful progress.
