Automated Disaster Recovery for KVM-Based Clouds

The StorPool Disaster Recovery Engine (DRE) is a built-in component of the StorPool Storage solution designed to provide automated disaster recovery for KVM-based clouds. It addresses a key challenge for organizations migrating from VMware, as the KVM ecosystem lacks a native solution similar to VMware Live Site Recovery (VLSR).
DRE simplifies and automates the process of data replication to remote sites and manages failover and failback. It is an automated solution, meaning a human is required to initiate the failover or failback action, distinguishing it from an automatic solution that would initiate action on its own after detecting an outage. This allows administrators to differentiate between temporary glitches and long-term failures.
The document outlines four primary deployment options for the DRE:
- Active-Passive: The classic DR model with a primary and a recovery site.
- Bi-Directional: Two primary data centers run different workloads, with each acting as the recovery site for the other.
- Many-to-One: A cost-effective solution where a single site serves as the recovery site for two or more primary sites. This option is not available in most other DR solutions.
- Multi-Site Mesh: A more advanced option for multi-region clouds, allowing for load-balancing across multiple recovery sites. This option is also unique to StorPool.
The DRE is included at no additional cost as part of the basic StorPool Storage license. The only requirement is that StorPool must be installed at both the primary and recovery sites, and the same cloud management platform must be running on both systems.
