Data, Workflows, and AI

Last year, I made predictions about gigabit WAN connectivity and non-public data distribution workflows. In 2020, enterprises should consider the following:

1. Workflow diversification: it is no longer enough to keep all your data and processes in one place.  Talk among customers and partners shows a growing consensus that workflows need to be spread across a mix of different cloud vendors and datacenters.  Keeping a foot-hold in multiple platforms ensures a smooth transition when economics, or the inevitable disaster, require a change.  This will require a strategic amount of data redundancy and real-time replication.  Over the next year, I expect to see a lot more attention paid to keeping data and workflows nimble across diverse platforms.

2. AI practicalities: When the hype is set aside, the current trends in Artificial Intelligence are about leveraging massive amounts of data to inform automation.  As AI projects move from proof of concept to production, the need to feed them a constant stream of high-volume, real-time data is growing.  In 2020, a maturing AI market will begin to look beyond core algorithms and services to encompass the entire data pipeline.
