Whitepaper: VDI Server Sizing and Scaling

VMware recently published an interesting white paper describing a performance study of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) using VMware Infrastructure 3.

It is described in the following way: VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is a server-based computing offering that provides desktop environments as an enterprise hosted service. VDI allows administrators to maintain and manage all user applications, data, and environments in the centrally located data center.

This white paper describes the testing methodology, results, and analysis and sizing guidelines for setting up Virtual Desktop Infrastructure using VMware Infrastructure 3.

It is a 19 page PDF whitepaper broken up into the following sections:

  • VDI Server Sizing and Scaling
  • Understanding Virtual Desktop
  • Server Capacity Overview
  • Test Environment
  • Workload Design
  • Performance Results
  • Summary of Results
  • Setting Up the Tests
