Cybersecurity Awareness Month: Plume IQ Detects 80% Spike in Malware Attacks Across the United States

Founded in 2004, Cybersecurity Awareness Month, held each October, is the world's foremost initiative aimed at promoting cybersecurity awareness and best practices. Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a collaborative effort among businesses, government agencies, colleges and universities, associations, nonprofit organizations, tribal communities, and individuals committed to educating others on online safety.

From mobile to connected home devices, technology is deeply intertwined with our lives. And while the evolution of technology accelerates, cybercriminals are working just as hard to find ways to compromise technology and disrupt personal and business life.

During Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Plume® is sharing new insights into recent cyber threat activity as part of its ongoing Plume IQ data intelligence reporting.

New Plume IQ data showed that from the second half of 2021 to the first half of 2023, malware attacks increased by 35 percent in Japan, and a staggering 80 percent in the United States. The data also showed that in Europe, phishing incidents increased by 347 percent.

For the first six months of 2023, based on a monthly average, Plume detected and prevented over 450 threats targeted at our customers' homes across the United States, Japan and Europe. Guard, Plume's network-level security service, offers real-time cyber threat protection for phones, computers and IoT devices. Guard is a built-in feature of Plume's HomePass app.

Whole-home device protection: Plume's Guard service filters out suspicious content as devices connect to the internet, providing real-time threat protection against ransomware, malware, viruses and phishing attacks.

Behavior analysis and anomaly detection: Guard identifies connected devices and monitors the network for suspicious activity. If Guard detects a device is compromised, then Guard will quarantine that device, preventing the threat from spreading to other connected devices on the network.

Ad Blocking: Guard blocks ad content coming from known ad servers, significantly improving the browsing experience.
