In early October, a widely distributed update to a popular operating system apparently contained a flaw that led, for some users, to the unexpected deletion of some or all of their data files. “An occurrence like this is any computer user’s worst nightmare,” says Condusiv Technologies CEO James D’Arezzo. “Hopefully, it will serve as a wake-up call for users and IT managers who have failed to protect themselves against the potentially devastating loss of essential data.”
D’Arezzo, whose company is a world leader in I/O reduction and SQL database performance, notes that the October 2018 incident was not totally unprecedented. An earlier update of the same program, for example, was delayed due to late-breaking bugs that caused blue screens on some PCs.
“Bugs occasionally get through testing,” says D’Arezzo, “in the case of any very complex program. What’s important is to be able to deal with problems as they arise, particularly something as critical as data loss. Our Undelete product enables not just the IT staff but any system user to find and recover an accidentally deleted file.
