2018: The Year of Ubiquitous Data in Flight

By 2026, McKinsey estimates that commercial drones-both corporate and consumer applications-will have an annual impact of $31 billion to $46 billion on the country’s GDP. In 2018, the growth of commercial drone activity will generate big data that organizations will want to secure and monetize. This is yet another example of how in today’s competitive business environment organizations need to use all of their assets to make critical business decisions to drive revenue, including data from multiple (sometimes unlikely) sources. To be successful, they will need real-time access to data to make accurate, timely, and actionable decisions before the opportunity is lost. Drone data, for example, could provide retailers more insight into customer demographics and the effectiveness of customer service programs.

To take it one step further, this also ties into serverless computing, where one thinks of, and builds, applications based on the services that are needed. Some data operated on it will need to be persisted and some won’t, but it’s all available to be used. Organizations will want to make all serverless data actionable so that they can make business decisions in real-time that will impact their revenue.
